Review * Swimmer Boy by Jay Argent

Book Blurb:

Liam Green is a sixteen-year-old boy who has just moved to Fairmont with his family. On his first day in his new high school, he falls for Alex, a handsome jock on the swim team. Alex doesn’t seem to be gay, but that does not end Liam’s obsession with him. Fate pushes the boys together, and they become friends—until Liam’s secret is revealed.

Swimmer Boy is the first book in Jay Argent’s best-selling Fairmont Boys series. It begins a coming-of-age story about friendship and the kind of love that is found in the most unlikely places.

This is the third edition of the novel. It contains the original storyline with editorial improvements based on feedback from readers to entertain future readers with a new, stronger manuscript and improved style.

Book Review:

This book sank and drowned.   I say book and not story because the basis of the story was good and what I was expecting.   Perceived gay kid being bullied in school with a crush on the swim team captain and how their relationship evolved.  If you have read any YA, this trope has been told many ways, and that’s OK, who doesn’t enjoy a coming out love story.

The problem with this book was the writing style and the utter lack of editing, these can probably be lumped together.  Changing POV’s so fast that you have to backtrack and find out what just happened.   Timeline inconsistencies that have you jumping into the past, this was happening as the POV changed, it left me confused and as I said before I had to go back and reread to get my head around what is happening.   I also found the character development lacking, which didn’t allow me to really care about the characters.

This is the 3rd edition of this book and it was still coming up with these problems.  Also, if you look at the Author bio on Amazon he explicitly states that his books are edited.  (I just checked before I finished this and that claim is now gone)  Hopefully he sacked whomever he entrusted his book with for editing.
